Brian Tissot has a Ph.D. in Zoology from Oregon State University and has recently retired from Cal Poly Humboldt’s Marine Laboratory. He focused most of his career, as a marine ecologist, working with invertebrates found in intertidal zones, such as the black abalone found on California's Channel Islands. Brian’s early work was especially focused on the effects of El Niño events on black abalone survival rates. Brian was the Director of the Marine Laboratory at Humboldt and a Professor in Biological Sciences. He is still a big advocate of collaborative practices when applying marine conservation efforts to public policy and research. Most recently Brian’s work with the red abalone was focused on the closure of the red abalone industry in 2018. As a member of the deciding council, he spoke of the concern he had not only for the abalone population and surrounding ecosystem, but also the cultures that would and have been affected since the decision to close has been implemented.
